About The Artist
Educated and professional employed as a designer my passion for art as a sculpture and ceramicist has lead me in a new direction. Attending the University of Kansas I received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in industrial design in 2004. Since graduating I’ve worked as a furniture designer (studying under a master woodworker).A corporate design consultant for Hallmark Cards, a product designer for a small design studio as a freelancer doing design and illustration, in the end…I always turned to clay as a medium for my expressions.
My involvement in the arts started from an early age, painting and drawing mostly. My first real exposure to clay was in high school where I fell in love with its forgiving nature and limitless possibilities. Throughout my college studies my love with clay kept me enrolled in a ceramics course, taking workshops and attending seminars despite the high demands of time needed in design school. Currently, I still find myself attending ceramic workshops, lectures, and events whenever I can.
Working in my spare time at Brachers Good Earth Clays has brought me many unique experiences and an understanding of what it takes to be a full time working artist. Through this job I have had the ability to meet, discuss and share art with some of the world’s best ceramicist such as Robbin Hopper, Pete Pennel, Don Davis as well as many other regional and local working artist. I have also learned how to build and maintain ceramic studios with the knowledge to build custom kilns, repair them and how to create are care for all of a ceramicist tools. Through these experiences I maintain a edge in understanding the latest in building clay bodies, working with plasters and wide range of firing techniques.
As my artistic style has matured, encouragement from friends and family has helped me achieved a personal dream in started MJ Carmen Ceramic Studios. Currently I produce works for custom home creations, fine art sculpture and commissioned work for commercial and residential settings.
